A few honest questions to consider before you choose.
Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Rottweilers are active, larger breeds that thrive with daily exercise and room to move. Beagles need moderate activity, while Shih Tzus are far more content in a smaller home or apartment.
Shih Tzus and Golden Retrievers need the most regular grooming attention. Beagles, Labradors and Rottweilers are comparatively low-maintenance in this regard.
Beagles, Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Shih Tzus are all known for gentle, tolerant temperaments with kids. German Shepherds and Rottweilers do very well with children too, but benefit from earlier, more structured training.
Labradors and Beagles are often recommended as forgiving, easygoing first dogs. Larger, stronger breeds like German Shepherds and Rottweilers can be wonderful too, but do best with an owner ready to invest in early training.
